Tadd Dameron, c. 1946-48 (Bill Gottlieb/LoC) |
Jazz has improvisation at its core, true, but ignoring composition and arranging would be a gross oversimplification and a mis-representation of the music. One of the great composers in its great tradition was Tadd Dameron, born on a day like this in 1917.
Tadd Dameron-Fats Navarro Sextet: "Our Delight" (1948)
Harlan Leonard and His Rockets: "Dameron Stomp" (1940)
Dizzy Gillespie and His Orchestra: "Good Bait" (1947)
Wes Montgomery with the Wynton Kelly Trio: "If You Could See Me Now" (1965)
Stan Getz (feat. Jimmy Gourley on guitar): "Lady Bird" (1959)
Cannonball Adderley (con Nat Adderley): "Stay On It" (1959)
Dizzy Gillespie (feat. Charlie Parker): "Hot House" (1945)
